Some characters like the artist Maggie Paige, who was supposed to be recurring, turned out to be difficult to use for the writers, while some others like Lucius Fox or Leslie Thompkins from the comics and new ones like Veronica Vreeland, Karl Rossum or Dr. Joan Leeeland. because of their skills, knowledge or position, turned to be very useful after their first appearances. Earl Cooper was an adaptation of Jack Edison the designer of the Batmobile in the comics and renamed after the first African American race car driver. How ever there is only one episode focused and featuring him. Other characters like Nora Fries, Maven, Dr. March, Dr. Francine Langstrom or Grace were notable as supporting characters of the villains.
Dick Grayson, the first Robin, popped up without a background story in Christmas with the Joker appearing progressively with more frequency each time until due to his popularity and Fox Network’s demand, he became a regular during The Adventures of Batman & Robin season. His background story was revealed in Robin’s Reckoning an episode that won an Emmy award for the series.
Barbara Gordon was introduced as a supporting character until she became Batgirl. During the The New Batman Adventures season, along with Tim Drake, the new robin, she became a member of the Batman family and appeared frequently.Catwoman, Dr. Kirk Langstrom (Man-bat) and Mr. Freeze some of the main enemies of Batman in his mythos, often acted also as a heroes or supporting characters. Other characters from the comics like Zatanna, Jonah Hex, The Creeper and Etrigan the Demon and Supergirl guest starred and episode each. The producers even contemplated the possibility of making the Creeper a regular character for the last season.
One of the most distinctive creations of the animated show, was aging actor Simon Trent, who played the The Gray Ghost, a movie serial hero within the DC animated Universe reminiscent of charactes like The Shadow and the golden age Batman, who served as the inspiration for the young Bruce Wayne. The character was voiced by Adam West, the actor who played Batman in the 1960s and also had typecast troubles.
