Batman: The Killing Joke is a graphic novel about the Joker, Batman and James Gordon published by DC Comics, written by Alan Moore and pencilled by Brian Bolland in 1988. The story focus on Batman's first encouter with the person who would become the Joker after a tragic accident and the way the Joker tortures Police Commissioner James Gordon at the present time in order to prove that the most upstanding citizen is capable of going mad after having "one bad day" like he had.

The story is set after Barbara Gordon activities as Batgirl and before she becomes Oracle. However, the flashback sequences in which the Joker is a normal man hired to disguise as Red Hood, are set around the events in Batman: Year One before Batman: Dark Moon Rising, Batman: The Man Who Laughs, Batman: Images and Batman: The Long Halloween.
