Batman: Year One is a graphic novel about Batman and James Gordon published by DC Comics, written by Frank Miller and pencilled by David Mazzucchelli in 1987. The story focus on Batman and James Gordon's first year in Gotham City, fighting agains the corruption that crowds it.
The story is set after Bruce Wayne, aged 25, has completed his training around the world and comes back to Gotham City to become Batman and James Gordon arrives at Gotham city with the rank of Sergeant. It is paralell to the events in which a man hired to disguise as Red Hood becomes the Joker, right before the events in subsequent Batman: The Man Who Laughs and it is followed by Batman: Dark Moon Rising, Batman: Year Two and Jeph Loeb's Batman: The Long Halloween, Batman: Dark Victory and Catwoman: When in Rome by which reveals the fate of several of the characters introduced in this story. However, in the current continuity, certain parts of the story, like Catwoman being a prostitute, have been retconed in the current continuity of DC Comics.
Batman: Year One is also part of the separated continuity crated by Frank Miller, coinded as The Dark Knight Universe that includes Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, All Star Batman and Robin the Boy Wonder and other stories writen by the same author.
