Earl Cooper is a fictional character created by Steve Perry, Laren Bright, Paul Dini and Bruce Timm for Batman: The Animated Series as the mechanic and creator of the Bat-mobile. He was played by Paul Winfield.
The character is partially based in Earl Cooper, the African American racecar driving pioneer from the early XX century, and in Jack Edison, a black racecar driver who, as Earl in the animated series, becomes the actual mechanic of the Bat-mobile in the comics.
Martha Cooper, his daughter, played by Candy Brown and also created by Steve Perry, Laren Bright, Paul Dini and Bruce Timm, aids Earl in his dutties as the creator and mechanic of the Bat-mobile.
Geez, that's unblieevable. Kudos and such.
[edit] DC animated universe history
In The Mechanic, his first and only appearance, Earl Cooper is revealed as the mechanic and creator of the Bat-mobile. Before meeting batman, Earl works for a car company that plans to release to the marked a car line with faulty brakes. After he fails trying to forestall the realease of the new line, considering he knows too much, his boss orders a hit to get rid of him. Fortunately for him, Batman was able to defeat the assaulter on time and then offers Cooper a job as his personal mechanic and the designer of the current Bat-mobile (the previous one is runned down). His daughter, Martha Cooper, eventually becomes involved in the project as well.
In the episode, after an incident with the Penguin during a high-speed chase, the crushed Bat-mobile is brought into Earl Cooper's secret garage for repairs. But after placing his car parts order, his distribuitor deduces he is repairing the Bat-mobile and tries to sell the knowledge to the Penguin who, after killing him instead of paying, forces the Coopers to tamper with the Batmobile, putting it under his control. Fortunately Earl is abble to create some improvised hidden safety measures and hints them to Batman.
