[edit] Plot

In the episode, three Gotham City children tell each other stories of Batman, which include:

  • Batman and Robin comically foiling a heist by the Joker in a museum of the biggest music instruments. The story is inspired by the stories of writer Bill Finger and artist Dick Sprang and their 1950s era comics and the camp 1960s television show.
  • An accurate recreation of Batman's fight with the Mutant gang leader, tribute to Frank Miller's Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, complete with a tank-like Batmobile and Carrie Kelly as Robin
  • And a "dig" at the Batman movies of Joel Schumacher (and possibly a joke), in which another child (whose name is Joel and who is standing in front of a sign that says "Shoemaker") claims that Batman has "tight rubber armor" and a Batmobile that can "drive up walls" (a reference to Schumacher's 1995 film, Batman Forever) all while snuggling into the bright pink feather boa worn by a nearby mannequin. It should be noted that, according to the DVD commentary, Batman Forever was one of Bruce Timm's favorite movies.

At the end Batman had to save the kids from Firefly.

[edit] Trivia

  • The episode is similar to a Batman story[1] in which Bruce Wayne listens to three kids discuss their versions of Batman (an example: the African-American theorizes that the Batman is black).
  • The producers considered including an additional tribute to the classic gothic 1970s stories by Dennis O'Neil and Neal Adams, but decided that it would not be feasible to emulate Adams' naturalistic art style for animation.
  • This is Firefly's last appearance in The New Batman Adventures.
  • According to the DVD commentary track, the producers feared that Dick Sprang and Frank Miller might be displeased with an attempt to animate their styles, and therefore contacted both prior to the start of production to ask for permission. Reputedly, Miller, who is notoriously difficult to please with film or television adaptations of his work, feels that the final product is one of the best depictions of his version of Batman ever seen.
