[edit] Plot

Part I

Superman travels in his spacecraft to the remains of Krypton, scanning for life readings. He is saddened to find no trace of life, but picks up a faint signal from a neighboring planet. He finds a frozen moon, and the remains of a civilization. In an underground chamber, a recorded message tells him the world is called Argos, a Kryptonian colony. Knowing that severe climate changes would doom their world, the colony’s leader chose to place herself and her family in suspended animation, hoping that her distress call would reach someone in time. Superman examines the cells, and finds that they have all been destroyed by time and weather, except one, containing a teenaged girl.

Three Years Later

Superman has brought the girl, Kara, back to Earth, where she has been raised in Kansas by his parents, the Kents. Having the same powers as Clark, she wants to be a superhero like him, but he says she’s not ready yet, and keeps warning her to conceal her powers until she is.

Over lunch, Martha asks Clark if he can’t stay longer, but Clark says he needs to get back to Metropolis. Jonathan remarks that he’s heard Intergang is causing trouble. As soon as Clark leaves, Kara immediately asks for more details.

In Metropolis, Lois Lane is, to her dissatisfaction, covering an electronics trade show. Jimmy Olsen, along to take pictures, complains about never having a chance at a big story himself. Lois, unsympathetic, tells him he has to grab the opportunity.

Chaos starts when two kids, wielding highly advanced weapons, break into the show to grab some electronics. Superman arrives, but the kids manage to delay him long enough to escape.

While working at his desk, Clark Kent is told that his cousin is there to see him. He is confused, then Kara appears, wearing a Clark-Kent-type disguise: big glasses and a brown wig. Clark bundles her into an empty room, and tells her to wait for him at his apartment. As he goes, Jimmy passes the room, fuming because Lois won’t let him help investigate the robbery. Jimmy meets up with Kara, who pretends to be a new intern at the Planet, and they decide to work together.

Jimmy has one clue: a video arcade token that one of the kids dropped. Jimmy traces the arcade that it came from, and in the back they find Intergang’s hideout. To their surprise, a boom tube opens and Granny Goodness emerges, revealing that the kids have been stealing advanced technology on her instructions.

Jimmy and Kara are discovered, and Kara reveals her new superhero persona: Supergirl. She takes down Granny’s minions easily, but then Granny calls in three of her Female Furies: Lashina, Stompa, and Mad Harriet.

Part II

While the Furies and Supergirl are tearing up a good portion of the city as they fight, Superman arrives to take them on. The Furies manage to incapacitate him and they and Granny return to Apokolips. Kara finds a boom tube generator that one of them dropped, and follows them.

On Apokolips, she evades a squad of Parademons and remains hidden while Superman is brought to Darkseid’s palace, in restraints.

Darkseid explains his actions: “What I cannot possess, I destroy.” After the events of "Apokolips...Now!", he is barred from any direct aggression against the Earth, so instead he will destroy it by subterfuge. Granny has used the stolen technology to build a powerful electromagnet that will draw an approaching comet into colliding with the Earth – an apparent natural disaster.

Kara breaks in and frees Superman; they fight off the Furies and escape back to Earth. Arriving back at Intergang’s hideout, they find the magnet, and Kara impetuously smashes it. But the comet is still on course for Earth, and Superman tetchily informs her that he might have used the magnet to reverse its path. Now he’ll have to do it the hard way.

Superman flies into the atmosphere and pushes the comet off-course. As he does, a small fragment breaks off and heads for Metropolis, still large enough to cause massive destruction. Kara hurtles toward it, smashing it to pieces, knocking herself unconscious. As she falls to Earth, Superman flies down and catches her.

On Apokolips, Darkseid orders the Furies to torture Granny in punishment for her failure.

Jimmy’s story on Supergirl makes the front page of the Daily Planet. As the other employees clamor around, eager for more details, Supergirl flies by the window, waving.

Clark mentions to Jimmy that his cousin is visiting from Kansas, and he thinks she and Jimmy would get along well.

[edit] Trivia

  • The Kansas weatherman is voiced by real-life TV weatherman Al Roker.
  • Kara seems to lack any inhibitions to killing as she killed off several parademons.
  • Superman seems to travel to Krypton's location and back in a short amount of time. However, in most incarnation it takes several years to travel between Krypton's former location and Earth. In fact in Superman Returns it takes Superman five years to travel there and back.
