Smallville is a television series losely based on several aspects of the early life and mythos of Superman, a comic book character created by DC Comics. The series focuses on the adventures of Clark Kent before he becomes Superman and takes place in its natalSmallville, Kansas, the town the show is named after. It is produced by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar for The WB network (currently named The CW). The series premiere first aired October 16, 2001 in television and is currently producing its seventh season.

The first four seasons of the series focuses on the high school years of Clark and his friends' Lana Lang, Pete Ross, Chloe Sullivan and Lois Lane. Lex Luthor is introduced as a close friend of Clark while Lionel Luthor is the main villain.

After season five, the show moves into more adult settings, with some characters attending college or having a professional life. Lex Luthor becomes the main villain while Lionel evolves into a good character.

With Lex Luthor and Lois Lane as the most notable examples, Smallville characterises itself for introducing a number of popular characters in the Superman mythos a lot earlierthan the time in his life he meets them in the cannon continuity from the comic books. In the series, Clark meets Lois and Lex in his teenage years as well as Kara Kent, Perry White, Jimmy Olsen, Emil Hamilton and villains like Brainiac, Zod, Bizarro and Mr. Mxyzptlk. The later seasons introduce other DC Comics superheroes as recurring characters, including Green Arrow, Aquaman, Flash, Cyborg and the Martian Manhunter. Green Arrow takes spotlight in season six as former schoolmate of Lex Luthor and the love interest of Lois Lane.

Seventeen years ago, as a result of Krypton's explotion, a meteor shower falls on Smallville, Kansas bringing Kal-El to earth and mutating several of the little town habitants. Jonathan and Martha Kent adopt the alien child as Clark Kent, telling society he is their own. The series starts during Clark's transition from boyhood to manhood as his condition as a Kryptonian start giving him special super powers and he struggles hiding them while battling the strange things that have plagued Smallville since the meteor shower.
