In the first season, aside Batman and Alfred, all supporting characters were original with some references to the comics. For isntance Ellen Yin is a reference to Ellen Yindell, the commissioner of Gotham City in The Dark Knight Returns while mayor Marion Grange is a reference to the former mayor in the comics with the same name, only female.
As in Batman: The Animated Series, in the early seasons the main character finds a strong oposition to his crussade in most of the supporting characters. The source of it is the police Chef Rojas whose grudge against Batman is felt through all the police force an specially detectives Ethan Bennett, and Ellen Yindell. The mayor Grange (voiced by the former Batman actor, Adam West), as an old friend of the Wayne familyon the other side, presents opposition in a healthier way, by ranting about the irresponsible bachelor image Batman cultivates as Bruce Wayne.
